Passage
I first wrote this editorial almost a decade ago when my children had graduated
from college. My daughter is now a pediatric intensive care nurse and my son
works for MeadWestvaco in supply chain management. I have since been blessed
with the birth of my first grandson who will celebrate his first birthday this
September. I am doubly blessed to have a magnificent wife, Cheri Elliott. She also
has two wonderful children who each have a lovely grandchild, ages three and nine. Read more. |

circle of life
A lot was going on in 1981. IBM launched the first personal computer,
NASA launched the first space shuttle, and I launched my career as a
private practice urologist. Cheri and I are delighted to welcome a new
associate, Dr. Daniel Ian McRackan, who will lift his urology career
off the launching pad this month. Read more. |

common ground revisited
Six years ago I wrote an editorial about the
September 11th terrorist attack on the World
Trade Center. At that time, the precise details
surrounding that tragic event were unclear and President
Bush and our congressional leaders were still debating
how to respond. I was inspired by an editorial about the
terrorist attack that was entitled “Shared Values.” Read more. |

add luster to your golden years
The silent onslaught of chronic illness robs years of life from
millions of Americans. Although individuals often equate
aging with declining health, fortunately this equation
doesn’t necessarily hold true. With proper health habits, individuals
can enjoy vitality into the golden years. This is because
each organ system in the body is endowed with ample capacity
called organ reserve, the spare capacity inherent within any
organ. Read more.

battle of the bulge
There is an epidemic of obesity in the United
States: three quarters of American are overweight
and one in three is obese (defined as
a body mass index [BMI] greater than 30). Women
have achieved gender equality with men in this
category. Read more. |

anti-aging without the hype
Even though investors are running for cover,
here’s a hot tip on a surefire investment that
is guaranteed to yield a lifetime of incredible
dividends. It’s as easy as one-two-three: don’t smoke,
stay trim, and exercise. That’s it. Regular readers may
recall that I’ve divulged this information several times
in past issues of Health&Healing. If you took my advice,
you’re undoubtedly reaping rich rewards. If you didn’t,
it’s not too late to rebalance your portfolio with three
shrewd investments that are guaranteed to yield a
healthy return. Here’s the prospectus. Read more. |

a complaint-free world
Just over two years ago, Unity Minister Will Bowen
conceived a program that is destined to transform
the consciousness of the world. He challenged
his congregation to go 21 consecutive days without
complaining, gossiping, or criticizing. He chose 21 days
because that’s the time it takes to ingrain a new habit.
He issued purple bracelets to willing participants that
were embossed with the words “spirit” and “a complaint
free world.” The word spirit serves as a reminder to
pause and take a deep breath anytime there is a
temptation to complain. Read more.

Seven Generations
Raising healthy children takes a village. As a medicine man, I know that protecting the environment, especially the air we breathe, is a prerequisite to raising healthy children. Breathing clean air provides life-sustaining oxygen that promotes optimal health. Read more. |

26.2
Cheri and I are training to run a marathon:
26.2 miles. We’re not alone. This year, over
two million Americans will run a marathon,
many of them for the first time. The average age of
today’s marathoner is 40+ years. This is new territory
for me—not the age, but the distance. Until recently,
I had never run farther than 5K. Cheri has outpaced
me. She tag-teamed with another runner in 2000
to complete Raleigh’s first-ever marathon. Our goal
is to run the City of Oaks Marathon in Raleigh on
November 4th. Read more. |

“fat city”
There is an epidemic of obesity in the United States: three quarters of
American are overweight and one third are obese (defined as a body
mass index [BMI] that is greater than 30). Unfortunately, excess fat does
more than ruin one’s waistline. Overweight and obesity are known risk
factors for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, gallbladder disease,
stroke, and some types of cancer. Researchers have discovered that fat may
induce these chronic diseases by releasing special chemicals called cytokines
that increase inflammation in the body. Read more.

the BIG “C”
The first thing that popped into my head when I
contemplated our topic for this issue, the “magic of
movement,” was
the word “change”—that unwelcome companion, who
has a nasty habit of showing
up uninvited at the most inopportune time. Nevertheless,
despite its poor manners, change is a visitor we must all
contend with. Read more. |

mind over matter
Do I believe that there is a relationship between mind and health? The answer is an unequivocal “yes.” That response is affirmed for me every day, as I have the honor and privilege of helping people in their own journeys of health and discovery. There is abundant evidence that the mind can also improve the quality of life and survival of cancer patients. Read more. |

the new frontier
The founder of the American Holistic Nurses
Association (AHNA), Charlotte McGuire, transitioned
at 2:22 on May 15, 2008. “Charlie,” as she was
affectionately known, had a dream that one day all
nurses would embrace holism in their personal and
professional lives. To help manifest her dream, she and 75
other founding members launched the American Holistic
Nurses Association in 1981. Twenty-five years later, a
major milestone was achieved when the American Nurses
Association officially recognized the AHNA as a nursing
specialty. Today, the AHNA serves more than 3,600
members nationwide with over 140 local chapters. Read more. |

this is not a drill
Almost a year has passed since I first watched
the award-winning documentary An Inconvenient
Truth. I felt compelled to share the message that
global warming is real and rapidly escalating but it can
be reversed if the world community, especially the United
States, takes immediate action. In an editor’s column
entitled “Seven Generations” I detailed simple steps that
everyone can take to slow the onslaught of global warming.
I have enumerated these recommendations again at
the end of this column. Read more. |
